I also volunteered to help with this "unique Bicycle shop" three days a week and I Love hanging out with other bike builders!
My Mt Bike consist's of:
An old Schwinn Cro-moly frame and fork
a Mix 'n match of brake, derailleur and other parts, some most likley as old as the mid 1980's and this old built-up bike rides as nice as some production bike shop models Iv'e bought in the last ten years!
The frame was so old the handlebar stem and seatpost were "fused" to the frame(somebody forgot the GREASE!) but they were the right height so I didn't care!
I will include a Photo of this awesome 'OLD" Bike within a few days as I just brought it home tonight!

Another Critical Mass ride, another stunning display of police brutality. Watch as one of New York's finest violently shoves a cyclist off his bicycle, launching him through the air to the curb at 46th street and Seventh Avenue during Friday night's monthly Critical Mass ride.

Although a judge ruled in 2006 that the monthly Critical Mass bicycle rides could proceed without a permit, the NYPD's stance remains somewhat adversarial. Though the city has not been enforcing the controversial parade permit law when it comes to Critical Mass, police have been ticketing cyclists during the ride for such infractions as not having the required lights.

A representative for TIMES UP! tells us that the cyclist in this video was arrested, held for 26 hours, and charged with attempted assault and resisting arrest. One other cyclist was ticketed Friday night for riding outside the bike lane, which is not actually illegal and often necessary, considering how popular bike lanes are for double parking.

UPDATE: MyFoxNY that the police officer in the video--22-year-old Patrick Pogan--has been stripped of his badge and gun and the NYPD has "placed the unidentified officer on desk duty pending the outcome of a department investigation." The bicyclist, Christopher Long, has not commented, but his lawyer said, "The video speaks for itself."

I'm and educator and the kids know I ride my bike to work daily. I get my bikes used off Craigslist and my main commuter bike is a mid 90's gary fisher mtb that is an aluminum frame. The bike has a bunch of scrapes and some rust spots on noticeable parts of the frame.

I have been riding the bike to work for over 2 years and it didn't bother me that my bike is a scraper, which is actually good because theft is rampant in the SF bay area. The bike is dialed in as a street commuter (brooks saddle, regular maint, slicks)and 'works great and I have no need to buy a new bike. Anyway, recently I had some students tell me that my bike is all jacked up due to the rust and scrapes.

I don't mind riding a bike with a torn up paint job, but I also want kids to get interested in biking and to know that you can be a bike rider and not wear all the spandex or have a 2K dollar bike. I try to love the ride, and the bike is just the tool to facilitate the ride. That being said, I'm considering painting the bike so it looks more attractive, just a little more pride in the ride so to speak mostly for the kids. So heres my questions:

1 If its an aluminum frame, is it really rust? Also, is it even worth it to repaint a 10-15 year old aluminum frame? With just street riding, how much longer would the frame last? I heard aluminum fatigues after a while, but I'm fairly nice to the bike. any thoughts on frame lifespan?

2 Should I even bother to paint the bike or just be content to ride a scraper?

3. If I dont paint the bike, I'm considering just throwing some black electrical tape and more stickers on the frame to cover up the worst spots. Should I try and clean up the rust( if it is rust) throw some primer down and then cover it up? Or is even going to matter on an aluminum frame bike?

there is a small but growing peloton of lawyers specializing in bike law,

Here's a look at a heavier duty, double-wide version using a car rim (click the "View Full Size Image [+]" link to really check it out). We need to go smaller and thinner without anything as big as a car rim of course:

http://cliffypop.com/galleryhop/2007/Stache/BurningMan2007-299.JPG

Problem is these pipes only come new in expensive 20 ft lengths. We probably need less than 3 ft.

Anyone have an idea about where to pick this pipe up for cheap? We've been calling around for scraps without much luck.

Would love any ideas for lightweight hubs and custom spoke ideas too. Thanks.

Some years ago, the Ginger Ninjas ventured by bicycle across the border from El Paso to Juarez, a couple of instruments on board. We got off the bikes and played a street market until 2am, got some people dancing, some drunks heckling, some singers along, even a pair of cops on beat on beat. It wasn’t the biggest show of our time, but it left a deep impression of the need for us to journey farther afield into the Mexico of our imaginations.

We thought we’d do it that year, or maybe the next. That was 2003. Now we’re ready, leaving on Halloween from our home in Northern California, bound for the South of Mexico. The route is 5000 miles, which we’ll cover by bicycle and maybe the occasional bus. We’ll be carrying with us our instruments and our new 800 Watt human powered sound system, living and traveling car-free on our so-called Pleasant Revolution.

A bicyclist was killed instantly and another was rushed to Harborview Medical Center after a dump truck turned into them Friday afternoon at a busy intersection in the Eastlake neighborhood.

The cyclists, both men, had recently moved here from Colorado, a Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman said. Neither was wearing a helmet, she said.

The truck apparently turned right into the cyclists at the intersection of Fuhrman Avenue East and Eastlake Avenue East.

Romio's Pizza & Pasta delivery driver Geoffrey Carroll was parked on Fuhrman, relaxing at the end of his lunch break when he heard the bicyclists' screams. Carroll said he looked over his right shoulder to see the men dragged about 25 feet.

"I could only bear to look for a fraction of a second," Carroll said. "I knew the guy was dead."

Romio's cook Eugene Ortiz bolted from the back of the restaurant.

"Both of the men were stuck together," he said, shaking as he pointed to the truck with the bicycles still wedged underneath. "We pulled a little bit on the bikes and one guy got free."

That 19-year-old man had "minor scrapes and abrasions" and was taken to Harborview as a precaution, Seattle Fire Capt. Reba Gonzales said. Firefighters believe his friend who died was also 19. The driver of the truck was not cited, police said.

In the past three years, there have been two vehicle-pedestrian collisions and four vehicle-bike collisions at the intersection of Fuhrman Avenue East and Eastlake Avenue East, according to Seattle Department of Transportation records. Friday's accident was the only fatal collision.

All the collisions involved vehicles turning into the path of the pedestrians or cyclists, Department of Transportation spokesman Gregg Hirakawa said.

David Hiller, advocacy director for the Cascade Bicycle Club, said news of the fatality has struck the local bike community in "a very personal place."

I've been given the chance to get school credit to build a rack for bike that holds hoops. It's my senior design project. I love all of the ideas that have been put forward, and want to make a design that is simple, effective, and easily built by anyone who reads my online instructions. It will hold at least 8 hoops and be easily removable and well balanced.
I was given an old fat city mtn bike a few years back and have just now gotten around to getting it dialed in for riding. The trouble is that it was left out in the rain long enough for the top tube to rust and seize the seatpost into place. I tried wd-40, beating it with a hammer and eventually a large pipe wrench, but it just won't budge. What's worse, the pipe wrench torquing eventually snapped off the top of the seatpost, leaving only and inch or so exposed to work with.

So, I'm wondering what my remaining options are. I'd like to keep and use the frame (was a really nice handmade frame back in the day). I'm thinking about using a torch or ice, but i'm not sure about the expansion/contraction properties of steel v.s. aluminum. Beyond that, I can't think of anything else to do short of reaming it out with a drill. Anyone have any better ideas?

I just thought I would post a quick note about a somewhat recent discovery which is really old, but new to me:

The Brooks B-17 leather seat. I initially dismissed the idea of a leather saddle cuz I be ridin' in tha rain and it would
probably get wet/ ruined, whatever. Then my friend Paul told me I had to try it, so I got one for my "not for rain" bike and
I loved it. I just bought a second one, cuz I got a new seat on my rain bike, and it hit me wrong as compared to the brooks.
The cool thing about leather, is that it molds itself to your particular ass, so that every dimple is getting supported as opposed
to other padded seats that just compress and or push back. So now I have one on both bikes, and I got a waterproof seat
cover and use a plastic bag backup.

There is a lot of misinformation on the web about soaking the seat in oil or whatever, to break it in but the break in time was really
about 2 weeks tops, and if you use the profide as recomended by brooks, the color/ conditioner does not come off on your
clothes as I read on some websites. I dont know where they even got that, maybe there was some cheap leather seats out
there at one time or something. my two cents...

This year's Critical Mass Anti-Auto Show is going to be the best ever. We don't have a space yet, and we don't have a single dollar for organizing. What we do have is a battalion of visionary bike riders and artists whose collective contributions will surely astound and enlighten the uninitiated. Bring your unusual inventions, your fantastic renditions, your most clever creations to Chicago's Tenth Anniversay Critical Mass Anti-Auto Show, and help us to celebrate the end of car culture.

Start to think out your artistic statement about city life, car culture, or the beauty of the bicycle. The show will open on the second saturday in February, and run through to the end of the month.
The cruiser would weigh more and the fat tires would give more resistance to the ground but then on the other hand, with the fixie your legs are always moving, but then factor in the lighter weight of the frame and the less resistance of the thin tires. I am more inclined to the cruiser at this point, but the extra bulk can be a pain on BART. any thoughts?

***Red Ride*** Bicycle tour from Southern Oregon to carry prayers and support to hurricane-hit Louisiana! Please take a moment to read, Respond and Ride...

Traditional Prayer Stick carried by bicycle from Southern Oregon to Louisiana. Prayers offered to Louisianas hurricane and socio-economic impacted Biloxi-Chitimach Confederation of Muskogee tribes, and the Point-au-Chien Indian tribe.
Have you been listening to the story from many directions? Stories of people’s lives changed through communities ravaged by neglect and hurricanes. The stories of grass-roots organizations and collectives founded in neighborhoods where hope was being withheld, sometimes at gun-point. Have you felt the string carried by many people who have offered their time to help stitch things back together? Finding the end of the string has been a journey in it’s self for me.

On April 9th, the Red Ride, a ride of prayers, will commence to deliver a prayer stick to the Native American tribes of hurricane-hit Southern Louisiana. The Red Ride is a proposed vision to the creator from Naomi Archer director of Four Directions Solidarity Network and myself Benjamin Harlow an Oregonian. Embodied in a bicycle journey of 70 days, and thousands of miles. The Red Ride is proposing to carry a prayer stick to many Indian Nations, tribes, organizations, and people everywhere. The riders will ask permission to pass through the peoples land. Will offer the prayer stick to each tribe to carry through its land, and gain the prayers of their people. Local events will be scheduled or requested in areas the ride passes through, in coordination with the indigenous governments to build solidarity and illustrate the connectivity of issues from one tribe to the next. If we haven’t contacted your tribe about being a part of the Red Ride Prayer Run please take this as an invitation to contact us with your desire to help. Contact information is at the end of the article.

The Red Ride is in response to an appeal for help posted on January 25th to the Four Directions Solidarity Network website http://www.eswn.org from 4 tribes in Southern Louisiana. The Grand Coulie/ Dulac band, the Isle-de-Jean Charles band, and the Bayou Lafourche band, three bands of the Biloxi-Chitimacha Confederation of Muskogees, and the Point-au-Chien Indian tribe. Though their independence and fortitude has brought them through many disasters and Indian hardships. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita created an intense burden on the people, and storm assistance was requested The Four Directions Solidarity Network mission statement is a “grassroots organization that uses a community-based model to organize people, supplies and other forms of support in collaboration with indigenous leadership and communities.” Four Directions was founded in early October while Naomi Archer was working with Common Ground in New Orleans. When searching the storm ravaged south with medic Dave Pike, they encountered Native American tribes who had received very little federal help, if any. Her heart lies with indigenous wisdom, and she understands the way that the needs of these historically marginalized people can be met. Four Directions focus in Louisiana is: immediate relief and recovery of homes and community, long-term relief and recovery through rebuilding and placing on stilts the homes and community, and solidarity with cultural preservation, tribal empowerment, and autonomy goals.

When I offered to come down and help, and decided to ride my bicycle there, Naomi and I came up with the Red Ride proposal. My goals have been to reach out to communities and individuals who need assistance, and this year I wanted to learn more about Native Americans, a part of my heritage. When I read about Four Directions, it seemed to fit my goals.

Naomi and I have been working hard to setup the Red Ride, which will take shape organically as it finds its way past many Native American homes. The ride will travel from Ashland, Oregon, along the California coast, crossing Arizona from the southwest corner to the northeast corner and meeting New Mexico around “Four Corners”. The ride will then proceed into Oklahoma the home of the Five Civilized Tribes and leave along a southern route of the “Trail of Tears” through Arkansas and into Mississippi meeting up with the Natchez Trace trail and turning south. The Red Ride proposes stopping in Baton Rouge to meet with a prayer walk leaving from the Bayou tribes for scheduled media events. Baton Rouge, which means ‘Red Stick’, is the state capital and has both cultural and political significance as well as access to a wide range of media outlets.

We still need a lot of community support to make the Red Ride as effective as possible. Cyclists or runners are encouraged to join in for part or all of the Red Ride. Ride through you home-town with me, please contact your friends or groups with the information about the ride, so they can join in. Route information is posted to the website (below), and anyone can contact me, or Naomi Archer, before or during the ride. Community members who can lend a supporting hand on the bicycle route will be dearly appreciated. Home-stays to charge the batteries, or a yard to pitch a tent in, bicycle collectives who can help tune the machines, and community kitchens who can offer a healthy meal, are all being sought out. The ride itself has no major sponsors funding the daily expense I or other riders will incur. So if you can help out in any way, even just a comment of support or prayer posted in the journal will keep the riders encouraged and rolling along. The Red Ride website with journal, route information, and sponsor thanks is located at http://www.cloudforest.org/bicycleride and is being hosted by the Cloud Forest Institute. CFI is also the 501c3 fiscal sponsors of Four Directions Solidarity Network and the Red Ride. Financial donors of any ability can make a tax-deductible online donation through the Red Ride website, send a check to the Cloud Forest Institute made out to “CFI/ Four Directions”, or visit Four Directions website for item specific donations. We work in solidarity, sustainability, and peace. Thank You for your support and prayers.

The Gateway Off-Road Cyclists and St. Charles County Parks (outside of St. Louis, MO) proudly present the 2006 Midwest Mountain Bike Festival!!!

What is it?
Formerly known as the “Midwest Singletrack Summit”, the Midwest Mountain Bike Festival is an annual event that draws mountain bikers, trail builders, and trail building advocates from 14 states throughout the Midwest.

The purpose of the Festival is to provide a weekend for mountain bike trail enthusiasts and advocates. Both in terms of knowledge development from the classes and seminars at the Advocacy Summit on Friday, and fun at the Saturday Festival, through to Sunday's 43-mile epic ride to test your endurance.

This year's MMBF will feature a points competition, whose winner will receive a Surly Karate Monkey Frame and Fork donated by Big Shark. Your entry into the competition is automatic based upon registering for the MMBF - it’s that simple.

Beginning on Friday, there will be points available for almost all aspects of the weekend. Every time you participate in an event, you'll receive points. These events will include, but are not limited to: The Advocacy Summit, Hill Climb Time Trial, Huffy Toss, Slow Race, and Guided Rides. We also plan on having many more ways you can earn points throughout the weekend. Some of these will be up to our judges, such as:

* Oldest Bike
* Ugliest Bike
* Best Costume
* Longest Distance Traveled.

This is only a sample of what we'll be awarding points for. So, plan on participating because the winner will not necessarily be the one who wins the big events.

We will award the prize to the winner on Saturday late afternoon during the raffle.

Brief Schedule of Events:

Friday – The Kona Bicycles Advocacy Summit: Friday is all about trails and advocacy. We’ll have informative seminars for trail stewards, club leaders, trail crew leaders, and trail designers. We’ll also have the International Mountain Bicycling Association for a special presentation of IMBA and all of their national and international programs.

Saturday The Festival – Saturday is the fun day. All day long we’ll have a festival atmosphere, with food, demos from several major bike companies, and organized rides on all of the trails, a huge raffle, and music provided by some local bands. The Trek Fit for Women Demo Team will be there lead by Chrissy Redden, former Olympian and World Champion Mountain Biker. Also Saturday night will feature a night time trial with prizes furnished by Light and Motion and Specialized. We'll also have 25 demo lights from Light and Motion if you don't have lights of your own.

Sunday – Sunday’s big event is the organized epic ride. We’ll cover 3 different trail systems, every kind of surface you can ride a bike on, and over 40 miles of riding. We’ll have aid stations along the way to fuel-up, as well as some optional stops at local watering holes for refreshments. The more the merrier. Shorter ride options can be done as well. There will be turn-offs.

Check out Festival Website for more info. We're adding more information, sponsors, raffle and schwag details there daily.

i found out that schwinn bikes like this one take a special size tire and innertube and what not (27 1 1/4 i think?). how do i know what size wheelset i need? i figured instead of building up wheels myself id rather buy a wheelset already put together but i dont really know where to start. how do i know what size i need?
I am a desert rider (Moab since 1976) making the horrid transition to Seattle. I have already ditched the extra lbs. and lost the suspension but I am still looking for the perfect set-up for the slick ass streets and thief heavy bike racks of the city. I have to carry a sizable load (not in my shorts), to include some delicate stuff (computer).

What I have so far, Marin urban series bike (I know, it has too many gears for most of you but Hills and heavy loads win)
Ortlieb panniers
ReLoad courier bag
What I am looking for is outfitting advice and riding advice to survive the city. Would I be better off on more of a road bike? The hy-bred seemed to make sense, but I the serious city riders don't seem to be riding them. Is it better to ditch the clipless pedals when you are on and off your bike so often? Tires? any ideas on something that doesn't slide all over on the perpetually wet pavement of Seattle? Finally, dressing for success, I am used to 360 days of shorts weather, what works here in precipitation world?
Thanks, any input would be great, including where the pirates go for beer between rides.

last night stu and i were attacked on our way home. there was a conflict over who had the right of way.. we did of course but they made an issue of it and tried to run us both over. there were two cars which stopped on floyd and laurel and at least six guys got out and proceeded to knock stu over. they started punching him and when i got on the mix they punched me and threw me to the ground.

the shit was fucked up... bottom line is if you see a liscense plate that god civ please contact the right people. this was the car that was DIRECTLY involved in our assault.

we are okay... i have a busted lip and a couple of bruises.. i think they kicked me while i was down and stu has a wounds and lots of bruises they definately were kicking and punching him while he was down....

thanks to everyone who has contacted us about the incident....
one last thing if you drive a car please be aware of cyclists around you ..... thanks... -julie
------------------
repost from a bystander:

"My gf and i just rode by and stopped towards the end of a hit and run/jumping in Richmond VA. A girl and her boyfriend got into a confrontation with a car over the right of way. It ended with the wanna be ganster getting out and jumping the couple, stomping the girl while she was on the ground. We called the cops and gave them any info we could. If anyone sees a silver honda civic with Virginia tag number "GOD CIV" please blow the car up and kill all who are in it...not really but do what u feel is necessary to justify this incident"

the two kids were on bikes, the car cut them off, they yelled, and the get rich or die trying types stepped out of the car and proceeded to beat them up. the cops have been informed...

but don't be afraid to deal out some serious ulock justice if you find this car. i'm so ready to smash their windows and slash their tires. i will total that car with my adjustable wrench if i have to. seriously. if you know who owns this car, fucking tell someone. don't be a pussy. this shit can't stand.

do me a favor and repost this.
I dreamt I was a bike pirate. I was on my 63 Raleigh B-line. Yes, I was dressed as a pirate, but I was riding around the parking lot of a grocery store. I circled this plump ren-fest type guy until I held him up for some loot. I got seven packs of roll-your-own tobacco (but flavored --like coffee), $17.41, and a pint of whiskey. He tried to make me feel bad by saying it was all for his girlfriend. I told him I didn't care, I could smoke anyone's tobacco. Then I rode away.
