I have had the pleasure the past four days to totally build an old mt Bike from scratch starting with a 25 year old Cro-moly Schwinn Frame!
I was amazed at how SOLID and nice riding a Bike I could build with totally SCRAP parts from very OLD bikes!
Pocatello Idaho has something called "Poky Free Bikes" where you can show up...and build up ANY old bike you find in "the pile" in town donated space in an old maintainance garage here in town! I also volunteered to help with this "unique Bicycle shop" three days a week and I Love hanging out with other bike builders!
My Mt Bike consist's of:
An old Schwinn Cro-moly frame and fork
a Mix 'n match of brake, derailleur and other parts, some most likley as old as the mid 1980's and this old built-up bike rides as nice as some production bike shop models Iv'e bought in the last ten years!
The frame was so old the handlebar stem and seatpost were "fused" to the frame(somebody forgot the GREASE!) but they were the right height so I didn't care!
I will include a Photo of this awesome 'OLD" Bike within a few days as I just brought it home tonight!
I just wanted to share the experience of building a nice bike from a "scrap heap".

What a cool community resource. :)

It sure is FD,especially since my little mt town here has a lot of very low income residents who cannot even afford 120 dollars for one of those ghastly "Blue light Specials in Aisle-9" in fact, the bikes we help build our residents here are BETTER than ANY "120 dollar department store bicycle". It's a great community resource and a great way to recycle bicycles wich would have been forever tossed in a landfill to rot. I have met a lot of really cool residents this way as well and nothing pleases me MORE than to have a little girl come in with her single mom and ask "mr,can you help me build a bike,my mom lost her job and cant afford one for me from Wal-Mart"...its stuff like that that tugs at the heartstrings and I LOVE helping small children build a bike for themselves! and I know that when we are done building it,it will outlast ANY department store bicycle!
This is the MOST satisfying "Volunteer Job"( I volunteer at Poky Free Bikes 3 days a week as a principal bike mechanic) I have ever had!
